Who writes this, and why

Solar Panels SA is an independent blog for South African homeowners and small businesses trying to make sense of solar. We started it during the worst of load shedding, when everyone we knew was getting inverter quotes and nobody could explain them.

How we work

Nobody pays for a verdict

Installers and brands can’t buy a good review here. If a post has affiliate links, it says so before the first one.

Written for local roofs

Municipal rules, Eskom tariffs, SANS standards and our own sun hours. If advice only works in Germany or California, we leave it out.

We show the maths

Every sizing or savings number comes with the sum behind it, so you can redo it with your own bill.

We fix mistakes

Tell us when we get something wrong. We correct it within a week and add a note at the bottom of the post.

What we cover

Load shedding was the reason we started. It isn’t why most people read now. These days the questions are whether a battery still pays off without Stage 6, how feed-in tariffs work in each metro, and what the big solar farms in the Northern Cape mean for the price of power.

So we write about four things:

  • Solar panels, from sizing and roof angles to which panel types are worth the money.
  • Inverters, including the settings most people never touch.
  • Batteries, with real backup times instead of brochure numbers.
  • Utility-scale solar, the REIPPPP projects and private wheeling deals changing the grid.
Note

We don't quote on, sell or install systems. For a quote, use a registered electrician or installer who can issue a Certificate of Compliance.

New posts every two weeks

Guides, tariff changes and what’s happening on the grid, by email. We never send sponsored content.
